The naturalist plate style, between science and decor
Several posters in the shop share the same visual code: that of the scientific and naturalist plates of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, once used to document and classify species. Insects, butterflies, fish and shells are carefully arranged, sometimes in rows like a cabinet of curiosities, in aged tones that recall old books.
Insects and butterflies, entomological plates
The entomological plate poster brings together a large dragonfly and beetles, from the stag beetle to the cockchafer, on a light background, in the spirit of 19th-century scientific books. Butterflies have their own posters too, surrounded by botanical motifs or brighter colors depending on the design, always in the same entomological vein: the entomological collection butterfly poster is one of the shop’s best sellers.
Fish, the freshwater naturalist plate
The fish poster, naturalist plate shows, in landscape format, freshwater fish swimming above the pebbles of a clear river, among the reeds. It is a decorative illustration, not a scientific identification plate. Another version, inspired by 19th and early 20th-century catalogs and encyclopedias, suits a bookcase or an office well.
Shells and starfish, the marine study
The shells poster, marine study brings together red and white corals, conch shells and scallop shells on a sea-colored background, as a tribute to 19th-century naturalist plates. The starfish and shells poster takes on a more retro, seaside tone, with hand-drawn lines and pastel colors, closer to a beach souvenir than to a scientific plate.
The whale: graphic silhouette or travel scene
The whale appears in 2 different styles in the catalog. The diving humpback whale poster goes for a graphic look: an immense tail raised out of the water, in flat shades of blue, under a pale sun. The whale tail and sailboat poster takes a different path: a whale’s tail rises from the water near a sailboat, off Vancouver Island, in a travel scene rather than a scientific plate.
Where to hang them
These posters pair well with the places where you already find them in the shop: the illustrated insect, butterfly and fish plates are listed among the office posters, for a studious atmosphere; the shells and starfish are listed among the bathroom posters, for a marine atmosphere.
More butterflies, in the same naturalist spirit
2 other posters follow the same spirit. The entomology butterfly poster shows, in landscape format, a study room with its frames of pinned butterflies, a net and a magnifying glass, as in a collector’s home, in the same vein as the beetles and dragonflies poster presented above.
The roses and butterflies poster offers more color and detail, with butterflies surrounded by foliage and flowers: a natural illustration spirit rather than a strict scientific plate.

Frequently asked questions
You often ask us
What is the difference between a naturalist plate and an Art Deco animal poster?
The naturalist plate draws on scientific illustrations of the 19th and early 20th centuries (species grouped together, precise details), like the corals and shells poster. The Art Deco poster simplifies the silhouette and plays on bolder colors, like the diving humpback whale poster.
Can you hang several naturalist plates together?
Yes, just like ornithological plates: insect, butterfly or fish plates pair well as a series, keeping the same size and the same frame for a cohesive layout.
