Garden birds poster on a blossoming apple tree, framed on the wall

The gentle poster that stays with a child through childhood. Longer-lasting than a comfort blanket, more visible than a book, more present than clothes that are quickly outgrown. A poster chosen for the baby’s room, which will still be there when the child is 10 and will keep telling a story.

Cute animals, soft landscapes, pastel botanical plates, dreamy travel illustrations. The rule: a soft palette (powder pink, sea green, sand beige) and soothing subjects, never visually harsh. A3 is the ideal size, framed in light wood or white lacquer.

Our catalog covers children’s worlds. See our botanical posters or flower posters.

Choosing a poster as a newborn or baby shower gift

Bibs, comfort blankets, sleep sacks: most newborn gifts get used up, worn out, washed, then forgotten in a box of childhood things. A poster takes a different place. Hung above the changing table or facing the crib, it’s what the child will look at every morning for several years, and then it will move to the big kid’s room and stay there for a long time.

The rule that matters here: give a gentle poster, never a harsh one, with a subject that tells a story in a quiet voice rather than a loud one. Here’s how to choose the right subject and the right size, and how to avoid the trap of the overly babyish baby poster.

Choosing a poster subject for a baby’s room

Avoid overly literal “baby” posters with pastel unicorns or motivational messages: children don’t grow up with those images. Prefer subjects that can carry through childhood: vintage birds, botanicals, forest animals in soft illustration, countryside landscapes. A poster that parents like too is a poster that will stay on the wall longer.

Our bird posters collection and our botanical collection tick every box. The garden birds poster on a blossoming apple tree, in A3 with a light frame, works especially well.

What poster size to choose for a baby’s room

A child’s room is small. A4 (€14.95) or A3 (€19.95) is preferable. A2 (€29.95) only if the room is larger than 10 m² and there’s a bare wall. Avoid A1, which overwhelms.

Organizing a newborn gift as a group

When friends, siblings or in-laws pool together, the simplest approach is to put together a small, coherent set (2 or 3 A4 or A3 sizes on the same theme) rather than a single large, imposing poster: a child’s room breathes better with several small sizes than with one big one. Appoint a coordinator who collects the contributions and confirms the theme with the parents ahead of time, without revealing the details to the child, of course.

Bird and botanical posters, a safe multigenerational choice

Bird and botanical posters work in most cases because they carry across the ages. A baby will look at the bird plate as a colorful mosaic. A child will learn the names (chickadee, robin, goldfinch). A teenager will find it soothing. A vintage herbarium plate follows the same path. It’s the poster that best survives the journey through childhood.

The trap of “custom” name and birth date

Avoid posters with a printed name and birth date. They make a great impression when unwrapped, but there’s likely disappointment a few years later when the child finds it childish. It’s better to give a non-personalized keepsake poster, along with a handwritten card. The card ages with the child; the poster stays neutral and so can be used for longer.

A note for later, not for the parents

The handwritten note on the card is the real gift. Write it for the child they will become, not for the parents: “When you can read, remember that we welcomed you with these birds because they fly free.” Those few lines, slipped into the newborn gift box, are sometimes found again 20 years later. It’s the gesture that turns the poster into a family heirloom.

To avoid with this gift: the childish poster with unicorns or messages, which will quickly look dated; a size that’s too big, which overwhelms a small room; and no handwritten card, which deprives the gift of its dimension as a keepsake to pass down.

Frequently asked questions

You often ask us

What poster subject should you choose for a newborn gift?

Choose subjects that span generations and carry through childhood: vintage birds, botanicals, countryside landscapes, forest animals in soft illustration. Avoid kids’ posters with unicorns or slogans, which date quickly.

Should you give a personalized poster with a name and date?

An illustration chosen for its subject can go with a handwritten card bearing the baby’s name and date of birth. If you would like a personalized print, check the options the seller actually offers. The choice depends on the parents’ tastes and the feel of the nursery.

What poster size should you choose for a baby’s room?

Measure the intended spot and compare the dimensions in centimeters listed on each product page. A small size can join a gallery set; a larger image needs more room. Test the frame with a paper template before choosing. Current prices are shown in the product selector.

What budget should you plan for a poster as a baby gift?

The budget depends on the size chosen and any frame bought separately. Compare current prices on the product pages. For several images, build your set from individual posters and add up their prices.

When should you give a baby poster, before or after the baby arrives?

After. In the first weeks, parents are overwhelmed. At 3 to 6 weeks after the birth, when the nursery starts to take shape, the poster arrives at just the right moment and finds its wall.

Should you give the poster framed or unframed for a birth?

Ask the parents whether they would rather choose the frame themselves. If you give it framed, check the exact dimensions of the print, the finish you want and the hanging method suited to the spot. A poster on its own with a card can also be a thoughtful gift.
